The Problem of Climate Change

In the last few years, climate change has become more and more a topic of discussion. That people are partly to blame for this is pretty certain. We know that greenhouse gases are one of the causes. Many of these gases are natural constituents of the Earth's atmosphere, but as a result of human activity the concentration of some gases has risen sharply. This is particularly true for Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases. These gases act a little like the glass of a greenhouse. With fossil fuels, deforestation and cattle breeding, humanity is influencing the climate.

As a result, the temperature in Austria will rise by 2 degrees compared to 1980 by the middle of this century, crop failures will increase, the number of natural disasters and sea levels will rise as glaciers melt longer and longer. In addition, heat waves and droughts are becoming less and less rare in Europe. Some large cities are not able to adapt to such situations.

But what can you do? You can travel by public transport, i.e. avoid unnecessary journeys by car, travel by train, walk short distances or use carpooling and car sharing. When it comes to consumption, seasonal products from the region or fair trade can help. Do not use a lot of expensive packaging and use rechargeable batteries instead of batteries. Two more tips: Use energy-saving lamps and avoid garbage.

The Austrian organization #FridaysForFuture is a peaceful protest modelled on the 16-year-old Swede Greta Thunberg, where interested and concerned pupils, apprentices, students and (young) people from different parts of Austria are fighting for climate justice. #FridaysForFuture is a worldwide movement, but each country has different opinions. The Austrians demand the only realistic response to the impending climate catastrophe: a courageous and radical environmental protection policy in line with the 1.5°C target of the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as global climate justice.
On May 24, 2019 is the second global climate strike in many cities (also in Bregenz).

Update: The Week For Future will take place from 20 to 27 September. In Austria there are strikes in many places called "Dein Ort für die Zukunft". As of 8.9.2019, 225 places (including Dornbirn) are taking part. On 27 September the big Earth Strike will take place. Bregenz also participates. fff-Logo-Austria
